German term

Ernährungsverhalten

German to English Medical Nutrition
"Bei einigen Visiten wird Ihr Ernährungsverhalten in Bezug auf XXXsäure bestimmt.."
Context is clinical study, in which blood levels of a certain acid are to be determined.
Can't quite grasp whether the volunteers will be asked to eat/avoid certain food, or if this is simply another way of saying that their blood levels will be checked?
Thanks in advance and Happy New Year!!

Discussion

MMUlr Dec 31, 2006:
Edith is right, and the most commonly used questionnaire is the FFQ Food Frequency Questionnaire (e.g., page 33) --> http://deposit.ddb.de/cgi-bin/dokserv?idn=968824013&dok_var=... - there is also an Eating Behavior Q (?)
Edith Kelly Dec 31, 2006:
They are not being told what and how to eat, at least not reading the German, they are asked questions and then subjected to certain tests to correlate intake with blood levels.
Jonathan MacKerron (asker) Dec 31, 2006:
Again, I understand full well what Ernährungsverhalten means here, the question is how it is being "bestimmt". Are the voluteers being told how to eat, or are they being subjected to certain tests to determine levels of this acid in the blood??
Edith Kelly Dec 31, 2006:
IMO they are asked about what they eat so that the level of intake of xxx acid and of course the acid in the body/blood can be determined. If there is not more context, then this is what the German says.
Jonathan MacKerron (asker) Dec 31, 2006:
it's obvious that Ernährungsverhalten = eating habits, and that is not the question here

dietary intake

I thinks that's all that is meant here i.e. how much of the XXXacid to you take in with your food. Certain foods contain x amount of this acid, so if you eat e.g. carrots, you may intake y amount or nothing, depending what acid is involved.

Recommended Dietary Intake refers to the amount of specific nutrients required in one day for good health. This amount is set out in guides developed by ...

Note from asker:
But is the implication here that the volunteers are simpling being asked about their eating habigs, or that they are to be tested?
Thanks for your additional notation, this is more or less what I was thinking as well.
