German term

Abgabekategorie

German to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals
Context:

Abgabekategorien
A Einmalige Abgabe auf ärztliche oder tierärztliche Verschreibung
B Abgabe auf ärztliche oder tierärztliche Verschreibung
C Abgabe nach Fachberatung durch Medizinalpersonen
D Abgabe nach Fachberatung
E Abgabe ohne Fachberatung

I know that this is about categories for dispensing drugs -- whether they require a prescription, and if so, what kind. I can guess at equivalents: "prescription category", "dispensing category". But I can't put on my finger on a canonical English equivalent. (The canonical French equivalent seems to be "Catégorie de remise".)

Discussion

gangels (X) Jul 15, 2009:
agree with jccantrell, it's simply 'filling' a prescription
jccantrell Jul 14, 2009:
Do we have this in the USA? I am not sure you will get a canonical English equivalent, at least in the USA. I know of refillable and nonrefillable prescriptions (B and A), but then ALL the others fall into OTC (over the counter) which, to my knowledge, I can pick up and pay for without speaking to anybody, not even the cashier, if I wish.

Good luck, and I will be very interested to hear the collected wisdom.

dispensing category

I have heard this term 'dispensing category' used before, particularly in relation to use of drugs in pregnancy. It is a term used by the FDA and an English-speaking audience would recognize this term.

Here's the rest (and most important part of that quote that cut off in my initial entry:
.....received a drug from category X of the United States Food and Drug Administration risk classification system.
Example sentence:

3595 women (2.4%) received a drug from category A; 76,292 women (50.0%) received a drug from category B; 57,604 women (37.8%) received a drug from category C; 7333 women (4.8%) received a drug from category D, and 6976 women (4.6%) received a drug from ca

Note from asker:
I like this one, but I went with the translation that came from Swissmedic ("distribution category").

The Swissmedic licence symbol
The Swissmedic licence symbol corresponds both to the "IKS" vignette printed on medicine packaging until the end of 2001 to indicate the distribution category, but also to the authorization number, preferably under the EAN barcode.
Below that, the distribution category is available in various formats.

@ Alan Frankel: Is yours by any chance a Swiss text ?
Note from asker:
Yes, this is indeed a Swiss text. "Distribution category" sounds fine to me. Thanks!

drug categories

but it may not be the official term and ambiguous; (the FDA uses 'drug categories' on their homepage when they refer to drug classes)

FDA considers a third drug category: Behind-the-counter

Note from asker:
Good to know. However, as you say, "drug category" does seem a bit ambiguous.
