German term

Schleuse

German to English Medical Medical (general) Orthopedics
I am having problems in the use of "Schleuse" in the following context. There are many meanings for this word so not sure how to translate it. The following is from a German medical report from knee arthroscopy. It is the very last sentence of the surgery report:

"Nach Extubation Übergabe an der Schleuse an das für den Aufwachraum verantwortliche Anästhesie-Team"

Thanks!

Stephen

holding area

In this case "Schleuse" refers to the transfer from "unclean" patient bed to the "clean" OR Table and vice versa (before the patient is moved to the recovery room).

transfer area

This is what it looks like: http://tiny.cc/i28lhx

(I actually believe the term "sluice" used by the authors of this book is Germanic rather than proper English.)

This is another image showing that a Patientenschleuse is a device rather than a room, and can be implemented also as a transfer window: http://www.admi.de/prod10.htm.

This company calls it a transfer unit - probably more appropriate than "transfer area", based on the above: http://www.maquet.com/content/SurgicalWorkplaces/Documents/B...

Danke Harald :-)
neutral Dietrich Herrmann, MD, PhD, MBA : Note: your URL refers to the English translation of the original German book by the same authors: "Lagerungstechniken im Operationsbreich". "Sluice is a dead give-away, I am afraid. And both authors (plus all contributors) are native German speakers.
