Discussion

Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. Nov 7, 2006:
Very welcome, Renate!
Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. Nov 5, 2006:
Welcome, Renate. Still, I wonder if there is a translation which I am overlooking or whether I have moved in the right direction. More time will tell...
Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. Nov 5, 2006:
Hi Renate: You may have seen the reference where Alterseimdruck is explained in parenthesis as (perzeptives Stimmalter). I wonder then if this could be rendered as "perceived age"?
Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. Nov 4, 2006:
Thank you Renate. No problem. What I have found so far (as you can see) is some references where "apparent age" is used to mean "the age one appears to be". I think I can find others. I will let you know.
Bjørn Anthun Nov 4, 2006:
The last sentence (Also praktisch ob...) is what I wrote (that part is not in the document). Sorry for the confusion!

That's what I find in what follows:

The following is from the reference cited:

** Apparent age**

Although the skin is itself a protection against radiation, this protection brings with it consequences of its own, leading to an 'apparent age' that is greater than one's real age.
The appearance of an individual's face and hands are often used as a rapid measure of age. Comparing the appearance of the face and forearms with that of less exposed areas demonstrates the major differences between intrinsic and photoaged skin.

Alsso, the last line of the question makes me think along this direction...

Following a short presentation, the students will disperse throughout the museum and select three portraits that interest them from 16 representational paintings. They will examine the images and fill out a worksheet that presents a framework for their observations. The worksheet categories include "figure," "clothing," "actions" and "setting."

Under figure, for instance, a student might note a person's stature, skin tone, ** apparent age** and whether hands are smooth or calloused from labor, "all of which should shed light on the subject of the painting and his or her circumstances," Causey said.

I will also propose: "perceived age" based on the following:

"Until now, skin's overall homogeneity and color saturation received little attention among behavioral scientists. This study helps us better understand that wrinkles are not the only age cue. Skin tone and luminosity may be a major signal for mate selection and attractiveness, as well as ** perceived age, **" says lead researcher Dr. Karl Grammer, Founder and Scientific Director of the Ludwig-Boltzmann-Institute for Urban Ethology, University of Vienna, Austria.
Note from asker:
Hi Zareh, just wanted to let you know that the last sentence is what I wrote (that's not in the document).
I think both 'apparent' and 'perceived' are very good options! Thanks for all your research so far. That's incredible!
