You're right, I found a related patent application that uses "web" about 100 times in this same context: https://patents.justia.com/patent/20190308384
How about "waste web" then?

You don't say whether you've done any research, but there are several suggestions in the first few Google hits, including "web" and "matrix". Have you considered these?

This is the part of the plastic film that would have been discarded and which the invention has saved for use. If you don't like "waste" I suppose "scrap" would also be possible.

neutral Erich Hegenberger : I'd agree except the picture in the patent just shows a section of plastic film (and it's described and numbered so that's clearly the bit they mean) with no sign of any grid or grate. I'd chalk it up to poor word choice on the part of the author.
