Rosa Paredes Jul 12, 2009:
@ margashaw the 'exudate' and the fluid in a blister IS 'serum' as indicated in franglish second answer
Rosa Paredes Jul 11, 2009:
@cetacea the only answer similar to mine is 'burn blister fluid' which I considered wrong, because we did not know there was a burn. I found that there were 2 options: 'serum fluid' and 'blister fluid', so I posted the one I liked best. The answerer suggesting 'burn blister fluid' has posted a new answer: 'serum fluid' which is correct, IMO. You have contributed nothing with your nasty comment. Hope your day gets better.
Rosa Paredes Jul 11, 2009:
@ Ellen Based on the additional info provided by the asker; although painful, this is less serious than what you are suggesting.

if it has nothing to do with a normal burn or the fluid of blisters, couldnt it be the following ?
Maureen Millington-Brodie (asker) Jul 11, 2009:
Not a burn Thanks guys - I should have been more specific: the fluid has collected because of an infection/abscess in the hoof capsule because the farrier has driven a nail into the sensitive part. It's a clear fluid, pus tends to be evil-smelling and coloured in my experience.

watery discharge emanating from a gangrenous wound

Peer comment(s):

disagree Kim Metzger : Not restricted to gangrene. The technical term is "wound exudate".
1 hr
disagree Cetacea : "Brandwasser" has nothing to do with "Wundbrand"./True, but "Brandwasser" is still not derived from "Wundbrand", but rather "Brandwunde". However, the term is now commonly used for fluid exudating from any kind of wound.
1 hr
but according to the asker , we are not confronted with a burn wound; Gangrene, however, corresponds to the German term and the fluid has to be drained.

In view of what the asker pointed out above in the "Discussion" it would be more appropriate to drop the word "burn" altogether and simply say wound exudate or exudate.

Brandwasser – burn blister fluid

Pus is a whitish-yellow, yellow or yellow-brown exudate produced during inflammatory pyogenic bacterial infections.[1] An accumulation of pus in an enclosed tissue space is known as an abscess. A visible collection of pus within or beneath the epidermis, on the other hand, is known as a pustule or pimple.

Wound exudate

The composition and amount of wound exudate1 varies depending on the stage of the healing process. In the inflammatory phase of wound healing, exudate levels are usually high, which may be a sign of wound infection.

Unlike acute wound exudate, chronic wound exudate contains enzymes (proteases) that break down proteins and newly formed cells. To break the vicious cycle in a non-healing wound, the exudate must be led away from the wound with an absorbent dressing.

Controlling wound exudate
Control of exudate, removal of unhealthy tissue by debridement and management of bacterial load are all part of good wound bed preparation. A good wound dressing keeps the wound moist and absorbs exudate, locking it inside the dressing to prevent maceration.
