German term

Zerrstreifen

German to English Tech/Engineering Linguistics vocabulary test
Absolutely no context whatsoever, because this is from a vocabulary test where the person has to pick the right word from a list to fill the gap in a sentence, and this is one of the "wrong" words on the list.

Background info

This was the only site I found with Zerrstreifen, but I don't have a good translation. It seems to be lines that distort the picture.

Versucht man dann zum Beispiel im HAM-Modus eine Animation durchzurechnen (einfacher Springbrunnen zur Demonstration der Partikeleffekte), so fällt auf, daß beim Anzeigen der Bilder während dem Rendern, die Farben der Workbench unpassend durchgreifen und so mitten in Grauverläufen auf einmal rote Zerrstreifen drinnen vorkommen. Problematischerweise sind die nicht nur in den Kontrollbildern, sondern auch in der fertigen Anim zu sehen. Weiterer Minuspunkt.

agree Cilian O'Tuama : why not distortion line (Verzerrungsstreifen)? / Maybe 'interference line'

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks - everyone made good points, and I'm tempted by David's suggestion that it may not be a word that people are supposed to know."

tear-strip

I have heard this used in this sense, to tear open cartons of biscuits and suchlike. Whether it was used as a (lazy?) corruption of "Zerreissstreifen", I really have no clue.

Maybe it was a made-up word?
