What the author wants to say is that licensed ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software is very expensive (any idea what companies pay for SAP software?) and that in some cases "on demand" software (a different model) might be the better choice!

Andrew, I think if the source text is ambiguous the translator is entitled to keep the translation ambiguous. It is not our duty to interpret the text. In terms of licence vs. license it would depend on the target audience, licence = BE, license - AE

Apart from the strange use of 'als' here, I am also wondering about the term 'company software'. In the context it is clear that this is software developed *for* a company. I feel that both the English and the German are ambiguous in that this could also be read as 'developed *by* a company'. I wonder if there is any standard way of making the distinction clear? Also, I continue to be bemused by the choice between 'licence/license', 'licensed' and 'licensing' (see http://www.proz.com/kudoz/1268724 )
