Wood is cut up into small chips which are then burnt to fuel either a central heating system or a warm water system. Usually such a wood chip system is used on a smaller scale for domestic purposes. However, there are quite big test units around, such as in the place I live in, Benediktbeuern, Bavaria, providing the big monastry with all its ancillary businesses with energy.
