German term

mit einem Rückgang reagieren

German to English Bus/Financial Economics macroeconomic theory
The context makes it confusing:
In the 1930s, with a lack of liquidity, "Preise und Löhne konnten auf diesen Nachfrageausfall nicht schnell genug mit einem entsprechenden Rückgang reagieren."
I translated: "Prices and wages could not react quickly enough to this loss of demand, with a correspnding decline"--but this really doesn't make much sense.

(prices and wages) could not react quickly enough to this (substantial drop in demand

I think it is not necessary to repeat the term Rückgang in connection with prices since a drop in demand automatically triggers price reductions
