Note from asker:
I don't think layout quite covers it, the text also refers to "Deckelgliederung". I think it's basically just the design of the lid, although design crops up so often, I'd like to avoid using it yet again. |

: @Asker: I think this covers it, because I expect they're talking about where the logo goes and how much space it should occupy, what decorative elements, etc.

contoured (design)/contouring
Gliederung does seem to be a synonym for Struktur as used in your text. If you are looking for alternative words to structure and design, then contoured might be a possibility. The following links might give you some ideas - Panasonic refer to the idea of making the lid of a laptop look like the bonnet of a car in order to achieve strength and a lightweight, attractive design.
Inspiration from car design! Make the lid like a car hood.
Strength had been added to the gentle curves of its large hood by some pressed lines.
In this way, the TOUGHBOOK Business-rugged acquired its distinctive contoured LCD rear cover, or lid, design.

Its sophisticated styling is full of originality, including the raised, bonnet structure on the exterior top panel

The laptop in question is an NEC LaVie G that's been outfitted with a contoured lid and rust paint job that's supposed to look like the body of the SUV

Thanks, that would have made for a great answer, if only you'd suggested it sooner. |
Discussion
and it is also described as
"Die Struktur auf dem Deckel"
How about pattern, or "the structured lid design"/"structured design of the lid"?

I'm thinking along the lines of "the structured design of the large upper cover of the housing".
