English term

surveyor

English to French Tech/Engineering Surveying at sea survey
During bathymetric survey, surveyor observes water level once every 10 minutes. The water level observations should commence 10 minutes earlier than the bathymetric survey and suspend 10 minutes after the end of bathymetric surveys.

From a document detailing the studies to be carried out for the construction of a port.

Thanks for your help with reference and/or explanation if possible.

hydrographe

Is the term suggested by R+C (and no doubt other basic dictionaries) for a marine surveyor.

However, you might also wish to consider the possibility that this person might not actually be an expert, but simply 'the person carrying out the survey' — in effect, a kind of operative. Used in this sort of context in EN, that is not beyond the bounds of possibility, and you might want to bear that in mind.
Peer comment(s):

agree Johannes Gleim : I think that the denomination "surveyor" is wrong and should be replaced by "hydrographer", or even "hydrographic surveyor".

Danke, Johannes! It's not wrong in EN, and we are not here to re-write the source text. And the word is 'hydrographer' (a 'hydrograph' is an instrument)
neutral Marielle Akamatsu : Attention : un levé hydrographique diffère d'un levé bathymétrique. cf. https://www.aquaportail.com/definition-13535-hydrographie.ht...

Yes, but I think the person carrying it out is still called a 'hydrographer' and not a 'bathymeter'

hydrographe

un expert pour cartographier, calculer les débits des eaux océaniques, fluviales ou continentales ;

Hydrography is the branch of applied sciences which deals with the measurement and description of the physical features of oceans, seas, coastal areas, lakes and rivers, as well as with the prediction of their change over time, for the primary purpose of safety of navigation and in support of all other marine activities, including economic development, security and defence, scientific research, and environmental protection.[1]

Bathymetry is the study of underwater depth of lake or ocean floors. In other words, bathymetry is the underwater equivalent to hypsometry or topography. The name comes from Greek βαθύς (bathus), "deep",[1] and μέτρον (metron), "measure".[2] Bathymetric (or hydrographic) charts are typically produced to support safety of surface or sub-surface navigation, and usually show seafloor relief or terrain as contour lines (called depth contours or isobaths) and selected depths (soundings), and typically also provide surface navigational information.

To distinguish from “surveyor”:

Surveying or land surveying is the technique, profession, and science of determining the terrestrial or three-dimensional position of points and the distances and angles between them. A land surveying professional is called a land surveyor. These points are usually on the surface of the Earth, and they are often used to establish land maps and boundaries for ownership, locations like building corners or the surface location of subsurface features, or other purposes required by government or civil law, such as property sales.
