honra

Portuguese to English Art/Literary History 16th century history of the Minho
a presenca de terras imunes ........como os coutos de xxxxxx e a *honra* de xxxxxxxx

Clearly a kind of land which did not have to pay taxes to the King, but is there a special word for this? I have already used "lands exempt from taxation" for "terras imunes" and "hunting grounds" for "coutos".

Thank you

thanks, Teresa. What do you think I should put? "bequeathed lands?
Honras (honores) were properties/lands given by the king to the people in return for their loyalty and service.

fief

I'm by no means sure on this, but this source has them as "fiefs" - might be worth investigating?

To become a povo, a village had to consist of at least twenty households and be situated over ten to twelve kilometres from a town with a court house [page 23] Ordenações Filipinas I, Titulo IX, nº 73). Parada de Pinhão had been an independent fief (honra) of the Counts of Sampaio and the major town in the area. Balsa and Vale de Agodim were too small and too close to Parada de Pinhão to be made povos and their inhabitants had been filly dependent on the juridical and administrative systems of that town.
