Portuguese term

enchimento aos “pés”

Portuguese to English Tech/Engineering Mining & Minerals / Gems working of a mine
In a brief caption describing a historical model (late nineteenth century) showing the workings of a mine:

"O método de exploração consistia em desmontes por degraus direitos e/ou invertidos, procedendo-se ao enchimento com material estéril, ao nível inferior (enchimento aos “pés”) e, suportados neste nível inferior, acedia-se e explorava-se as zonas superiores do jazigo (desmonte do “teto”)."

could this be 'stage filling' or 'back filling'? I can't find any conclusive answers via internet research, and the term doesn't seem very common in PT. It's a translation for a museum, and mining is not my normal area, so all help is much appreciated.

Many thanks

See if you can access this (ridiculously long) link - and go to section 3.1 on p.153 where there is an explanation. Not sure if it's what you're looking for. If it is, "desmonte ao teto" would be "top/down".

If the links don't work - as they often don't here - try googling something like bottom up+backfill+ mining
Example sentence:

...ore extraction commences from the lowest point of the orebody and progresses upwards, again using backfill, until the extraction has reached the next access point. This mining sequence (...) is referred as Bottom Up mining.

Note from asker:
thanks for the link, Jennifer. I'm not sure the bottom/up idea is the equivalent of the bracketed term here, since it refers to 'enchimento'. And my understanding of this part of the process is that they are working downwards and then moving to extract from the upper levels (I thought the desmonte do teto may be roof extraction).
