French term or phrase: Une Valeur Résiduelle de cession
In a artists' agency website, offering advice on how to optimise tax when dealing with the leasing of works of art rather than purchasing them. Context:"**Une Valeur Résiduelle de cession** est possible à terme auprès d’un tiers bénéficiaire (personne physique ou personne morale) lui permettant ainsi de devenir le propriétaire de l’œuvre". Does this mean that a residual value can be offset to the benefit of a third person if they become owner of the work of art at the end of the lease? What is the meaning of "cession" here? Any help gratefully received!

Residual sale value
Explanation:

cession = assignment, a legal term for transfer of ownership basically

Most often carried out through a sale or a disposal, but not always.

For me, the context is muddled and doesn't make sense, so I would translate the sentence literally, personally.

OR, better

"Residual sale value may ultimately be generated by selling..."

If a company is leasing a work of art, then how does it make money when it is sold???

By far, more common terms are "valeur résiduel" and "residual value"...the sale bit is implied.

Depends on the point of view of course. The artist will (or should, at least) make money when his/her work of art that was being leased is sold, the lessee (the company leasing it) won't.

If the intended audience of this text is companies that might want to lease works of art, then I stand by my original interpretation, i.e. that the text is muddled, since the company doesn't particularly care whether the starving artist makes money from an eventual sale or not.

residual value of transfer

Explanation:
I hesitate to use the word "sale" because we're not actually sure if there will be a sale in this context.

A Residual Value on Disposal

Explanation:
Though the term of 'disposal' may be anathema to the vast majority of into-English ProZ translators and pace Daryo, I feel the preposition ought to be on rather than of disposal, such as a surplus on liqudiation of a corp.

Indeed, such value has to be worked out - including by us earnest ex-students of accountancy and revenue law - for the purposes of CGT - UK Capital Gains Tax and even IT - income tax on notional disposal by 'throwing away' stock.

Example sentence(s):
  • The residual value of an asset is determined by considering the estimated amount that an asset's owner would earn by disposing of the asset, less any disposal cost.
  • Residual value may also be referred to as salvage value, disposal value, or scrap value.

residual value of leasing/renting

Explanation:
I say 'leasing' because the piece of art is on lease before it is sold.

disagree  Daryo: the "residual value" is what is left to pay to buy the artwork, not the "value" of the "renting"
