This is the scam: ProZ used to contact potential victims Substantial work offered, translator proposal requested, source text attached to initial email Translator sends proposal requesting up front payment of one third. Proposal accepted with up front payment raised to one half. Translator's bank details requested and sent PO sent with fake phone number (checking code or dialling number given is essential) DO NOT TURN DOWN OTHER WORK No upfront payment sent Continued interest in translation expressed throughout month Finally, bank calls (if you're lucky) to say they have a suspicious looking check in your name for three times the amount of the upfront payment. Legally, they cannot deposit to your account without your endorsement (some banks do) Scammer sends email to say they have sent upfront payment, but "there's a problem with the amount." The scam is: If the check is deposited, the scammer wants the overpayment returned. Problem is: the check bounces and the translator is liable for the amount returned. Nice. This is not a new scam but apparently still works. France is a favourite, even though (at least at my bank) accounts are protected by security codes, so, don't worry but BE WARNED.

I've seen it, along with about a dozen others that arrive every few days or so. Thunderbird is great at sending these directly to my 'junk' folder. See if your email provider has that option. It won't happen right away, though, it takes some time for it to 'learn' what you consider junk mail.
