I guess this profession is somewhat different Nov 11, 2013

... than the desktop publishing skills that some translator job descriptions require?

Endangered Career #1: Desktop Publisher

2010 - 2020 Outlook*: -15 percent,
3,300 lost jobs

Brick-and-mortar bookstores have almost become as rare as unicorns. Newspapers are closing down or laying off entire departments. And desktop publishers are the ones who design the layouts for these dying industries.

Why It's Nearing Extinction: "No big surprise here," says Julie Bauke, career strategist and president at The Bauke Group, a career coaching and consulting firm. "Print publications are on the decline, and with them, so is the need for desktop publishers."

"Additionally, the software used in desktop publishing is easier to use and more powerful than ever before, making it easier for relative novices to utilize," says Bauke.

Just curious. Never had any experience in this field; so I haven't the foggiest.

Nov 13, 2013

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-24677113

A new word has suddenly become wildly popular in China - "tuhao" - which loosely translated means "nouveau riche". There have been more than 100 million references to the word "tuhao" on social media since early September.
---
This new usage of the term took off in September after a widely-shared joke about a rich, but unhappy man, who goes to a Buddhist monk for advice, expecting to be told to live a more simple life. The monk replies instead with the phrase: "Tuhao, let's be friends!"

Easter Song
By George Herbert (1593–1633)

I GOT me flowers to straw Thy way,
I got me boughs off many a tree;
But Thou wast up by break of day,
And brought’st Thy sweets along with Thee.

The sunne arising in the East,
Though he give light, and th’ East perfume,
If they should offer to contest
With Thy arising, they presume.

Can there be any day but this,
Though many sunnes to shine endeavour?
We count three hundred, but we misse:
There is but one, and that one ever.

I had a habit of always mulling over the graphs of linear and parabolic equations when I was in junior high. Based on the equations' coefficients(plus, minus, value, etc.), I would visualize how their slopes, intercepts, vertices, openings, etc. morphed from the equations' basic graph form, and how they shifted up, down, left, and right from the origin (0, 0) in the Cartesian coordinate plane. Rather than respectively substituting x=0, y=0 into the equation to derive where it would intersect with the x and y axes, I preferred to do it the hard way and think through the process of how the basic function morphed in shape and shifted in position.

Anyway, it was kind of a weird obsession of mine at that age, but was probably also a good exercise for the brain. On some level, it may have prepared me for my job as an engineer in later years.

Thank you, Steve, for such a subtle recall; I could almost vividly portray the silent gesture while reading through your lines. I was actually hesitant to post the subject article as "妙文", although I found it very interesting(and for Easter); I even ventured to substitute the fun factor(f) and the number of kids(k) with other factors.

To me, the Cartesian coordinate system is not merely a tool for data analysis; the concept behind the Cartesian Coordinates has had a great impact on my thinking/reasoning. I often project matters to different quadrant sorely base on my sensing or instinct (not equations, which I’m not capable to formulate ), and apply logical reasoning on them, respectively. Of course, multipronged issues would never be governed by logic in reality.

But, Steve, your passage enlightened me about exploring different angles to outline matters as a whole on the Cartesian coordinate plane.
