Yueyin,

I was scanning through the CNN headlines just now, and noticed this excerpt by Jack Cafferty from his new book "Now or Never".

Turns out he indeed had a drinking problem, like you once mentioned before. But I still appreciate his honesty in speaking his mind on different issues, dealing with his own demons being one of them.

Strong winds blew the snow off the roof. Otherwise, it could be 10 inches think.

Yueyin,

It could have been the same weather system.

I'd take the hail over the snow. Although I had to get a new windshield. Now the roofers are telling me I need a new roof.

The hail in our neighborhood wasn't that dense. But the size of the hailstones was enornous ... as big as tennis balls, I'd say. None of the videos on YouTube do them justice.

Yes, that's indeed beautiful. But snow scenes are nice until you need to get on the road.

I prefer snow to hail Apr 6, 2009

Steve,

Yes, it could have been the same weather system. Normally, auto insurance doesn’t cover windshield. Does your house insurance cover the roof? Probably, not in Austin area.

A nice thing to be a freelancer is that he doesn’t need to get on the road in a big snow.

Yes, luckily my home insurance does cover hail damage. But there's a deductible that amounts to about $2k.

I just had it replaced about 2 years ago after the last big hailstorm.

One thing I have to say I don't miss is the snow. Yes, it would be nice to have a white Christmas each year around Christmastime. But the driving hazard still outweighs the scenic beauty and the holiday atmosphere.

KOREA
- The First War We Lost
http://bevinalexander.com/books/korea-first-war-we-lost-preface.htm

“This book attempts to show that the United States---with the aid of South Korea and the support of some United Nations members---won one war against the North Koreans, and lost another war against the Red Chinese” . The causes of these two wars were essentially and totally different. The North Koreans were bent on overt aggression and were thwarted. The Red Chinese were trying to protect their homeland from the potential threat of invasion and were successful.

Finally, this book tries to show the Korean War as it actually was fought and as the tactical and strategic decisions, good and bad, were made. In this, the dedication and devotion of men on both sides to what they believed to be their nations’ needs were demonstrated in such full measure as to suggest the awesome powers of human sacrifice and endeavor that leaders everywhere hold in their hands, and what immense responsibility for the exercise of those powers they assume.”

尽管爱国 Apr 11, 2009

有点难服侍/侍候。(写的英文很顺溜)。

http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=454117&publicationSubCategoryId=202

The Russians sank a Hong Kong freighter last month, killing the seven Chinese seamen onboard. We can live with that-—Lenin and Stalin were once the ideological mentors of all Chinese people. The Japanese planted a flag on Diàoyú Island. That's no big problem-—we Hong Kong Chinese love Japanese cartoons, Hello Kitty, and shopping in Shinjuku, let alone our round-the-clock obsession with karaoke.

But hold on-—even the Filipinos? Manila has just claimed sovereignty over the scattered rocks in the South China Sea called the Spratly Islands, complete with a blatant threat from its congress to send gunboats to the South China Sea to defend the islands from China if necessary. This is beyond reproach. The reason: There are more than 130,000 Filipina maids working as HK$3,580-a-month cheap labor in Hong Kong. As a nation of servants, you don't flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter.

As a patriotic Chinese man, the news has made my blood boil. I summoned Louisa, my domestic assistant who holds a degree in international politics from the University of Manila, hung a map on the wall, and gave her a harsh lecture. I sternly warned her that if she wants her wages increased next year, she had better tell everyone of her compatriots in Statue Square on Sunday that the entirety of the Spratly Islands belongs to China.

Grimly, I told her that if war breaks out between the Philippines and China, I would have to end her employment and send her straight home, because I would not risk the crime of treason for sponsoring an enemy of the state by paying her to wash my toilet and clean my windows 16 hours a day. With that money, she would pay taxes to her Government, and they would fund a navy to invade our motherland and deeply hurt my feelings.

Oh yes. The Government of the Philippines would certainly be wrong if they think we Chinese are prepared to swallow their insult and sit back and lose a Falkland Islands War in the Far East. They may have Barack Obama and the hawkish American military behind them, but we have a hostage in each of our homes in the Mid-Levels or higher. Some of my friends told me they have already declared a state of emergency at home. Their maids have been made to shout 'China, Madam/Sir' loudly whenever they hear the word "Spratly". They say the indoctrination is working as wonderfully as when we used to shout, "Long live Chairman Mao!" at the sight of a portrait of our Great Leader during the Cultural Revolution. I’m not sure if that's going a bit too far, at least for the time being.
