could have been entirely lost Explanation: I would turn the phrase around and make it passive. "On" often becomes the passive voice in English. "Otherwise, Water Lilies could have been entirely lost in 1944." However, your text does seem somewhat informal. So if the audience requires more informality, I would say: "We were really lucky....we could have ended up losing Water Lilies entirely in 1944!" |
